What are the Pericardial Mesothelioma Treatment
options ?
Due to the close proximity to the heart (practically on it) most
pericardial mesothelioma sufferers won't have to
undergo surgery in order to remove the cancer.
Pericardial mesothelioma develops practically on the heart,
therefore any 'treatment' would be to relieve the pressure on the heart. If the tumors are small, and haven't
propagated to the chest wall, lymph nodes, or lungs then surgery can sometimes be successfully
performed.
Any attempts at radiation or surgery are extrememly risky,
therefore most of the time the only option left is somethign known as palliative treatment.
Since radiation may damage the lungs as well as the heart itself, doctors tend to favor palliative treatment
because they remove excess fluid from the pericardium. This procedure is called fine needle
aspiration.
The prognosis for pericardial mesothelioma is grim, with survival rates
rearely surpassing half a year. You'd be fortunate to live more than 2 years.
